Adelaide Hills wine tours: the best wineries for a private day
Half an hour from the city, the road climbs out of Adelaide and the air changes. The Adelaide Hills is South Australia's cool-climate wine region: crisp Sauvignon Blanc, elegant Chardonnay, fine Pinot Noir and some of the country's best sparkling, made among gum trees, orchards and old stone villages.
It's also the easiest wine region to do badly. The cellar doors are spread across winding back roads, the best lunches book out weeks ahead, and somebody has to drive. This guide covers the wineries we'd build a private Adelaide Hills day around, how to plan it, and what makes the difference between a nice day and a great one.
Why the Adelaide Hills is perfect for a private wine tour
The Hills reward a slower pace. Distances are short but the roads are scenic and twisting, so a day here is about three or four exceptional stops rather than ticking off ten. A private tour lets you:
- Taste properly. No one is counting glasses or nominating a driver.
- Book the experiences, not just the tastings. Seated tastings, vineyard tours and long lunches need reservations, and they're where the Hills shine.
- Move at your own pace. Stay longer where you love it, skip what you don't.
- Finish at golden hour. The light over the Hills late in the afternoon is the best way to end the day.
The wineries worth building your day around
Shaw + Smith, Balhannah
One of Australia's most respected names in cool-climate wine, best known for its Sauvignon Blanc and M3 Chardonnay. The cellar door is calm and architectural, with long views over the vines. On Fridays and Saturdays the Balhannah Tour takes you through the vineyard and winery, with a tasting of their wines and limited single-site releases alongside a South Australian produce plate. If you want one stop that shows what the Hills does best, start here.
The Lane Vineyard, Hahndorf
The Lane is where we'd put lunch. The restaurant looks straight out across the vineyard, and a long lunch with a VIP tasting is the centrepiece of our Adelaide Hills day. Book a window table, take your time, and let the afternoon stretch.

Bird in Hand, Woodside
A beautiful estate with gardens, a striking cellar door and an excellent sparkling range. Bird in Hand is one of our partners, and it's an easy, elegant stop that suits groups and couples alike.
Hahndorf Hill Winery, Hahndorf
Known for championing Austrian grape varieties, especially Grüner Veltliner, and for pairing wine with chocolate. It's a fun, different tasting that guests always talk about afterwards.
Deviation Road, Longwood
If you love sparkling, Deviation Road is the stop. Traditional-method sparkling wines made in the cool Hills climate, in a relaxed setting tucked into the valley.
How to plan the perfect day
Here's the shape we've found works best:
- Late morning: collected from your home or hotel in Adelaide, and up into the Hills in around half an hour.
- Two tastings before lunch: one estate tasting and one smaller, characterful cellar door.
- A long lunch: around an hour and a half, with wine matched to the food.
- One more tasting: something sparkling or something different to finish.
- Golden hour: a stop at the summit as the light drops, then home.
Four stops, including lunch, is the sweet spot. Any more and you're rushing; any fewer and you'll wish you'd seen more.
When to go
The Hills are lovely year-round, and each season changes the day:
- Spring (September to November): green vines, blossom in the orchards and mild days.
- Summer (December to February): long evenings and the Crush festival in January.
- Autumn (March to May): vintage in full swing and the Hills at their most colourful.
- Winter (June to August): open fires, big reds and the Winter Reds weekend in July.
Weekends book out first, especially for lunch. Weekdays are quieter and often give you more time with the winemakers.
